Why We Left the Big Franchises: How the Restoration Industry Showed Us Prevention Is the Real Protection

“One of the reasons N.T.O.E. started is because I’ve been on both sides of the spectrum, as a preferred vendor for insurance companies, where we were working for their needs, and as an independent, where the customer came first.”
– Naz

Before founding N.T.O.E., our owner Naz spent years working within a large franchise restoration company. He was good at the work, responding to emergencies, restoring properties after disasters, coordinating insurance claims. But something didn’t sit right.

Time and again, he arrived at properties where the damage could have been prevented entirely. These weren’t inevitable disasters, they were predictable problems that no one had been there to catch.

Education and proactive care simply weren’t priorities. And Naz saw property owners paying the price for it.

That realization became the foundation of N.T.O.E.

This post explains why we walked away from the franchise model, what we learned about the restoration industry’s gaps, and how we built a company that puts prevention and property owners first.

What We Learned Working Inside Big Restoration Franchises

The Industry’s Dirty Secret

When inside a large restoration franchise, one of the biggest eye-openers was the preferred vendor model. In simple terms, this means restoration companies are chosen by insurance companies to handle claims on their behalf.

Under this model, the priority is almost always the insurance company. Because of that, teams are under constant pressure to minimize costs, rush through jobs, and avoid asking questions that could complicate or increase a claim. As a result, quality can be affected.

What We Saw That Made Us Uncomfortable

The longer we worked inside these franchises, the harder it became to ignore what was happening on a day-to-day level.

“The reason I’m sick and tired of people being taken advantage of is the reason N.T.O.E. was created. I have been a part of a big franchise where I saw all the double standards—the bullying and harassment of the contractors, the vendors, the adjusters—all of it.”
– Naz

Important details were kept from the homeowners, explanations were rushed, and many did not fully understand what work was being done or why until the bill arrived.

At the same time, contractors were pushed to cut corners to meet timelines and cost targets. Instead of fixing root causes, the focus stayed on quick reactions.

We did not want to be part of a cycle that profits from confusion and crisis. Therefore, we chose a path centered on education, transparency, and prevention.

The Moment Everything Changed: Some Disasters Have Warning Signs

“In our industry, everything is reactive. Nobody takes any proactive approach. And I believe there’s an open market for that, a need where we can save a lot of money for a lot of people.”
– Naz

Most property issues share common root causes, but property owners often react only after something goes wrong, simply because they didn’t know what to look for. Many problems signal themselves weeks or even months in advance, but recognizing those early warnings isn’t something homeowners should be expected to know on their own.

That’s where we come in. When you partner with us, education becomes a core part of the relationship. We help you understand what to watch for and catch issues before they escalate.

Take water damage, for example. In our experience, it rarely starts as a flooded room. More often, it begins quietly—a small leak, a worn seal, or an aging pipe slowly deteriorating over time.

Fire damage often follows a similar trajectory. While some fires are true accidents, many stem from preventable conditions: neglected electrical systems, outdated wiring, or panels that should have been inspected sooner.

Mold behaves the same way. It doesn’t just appear overnight. It needs moisture—often hidden behind walls, under floors, or in places no one thinks to check. When that moisture goes unnoticed, it creates the perfect environment for growth.

The pattern is clear: many of the disasters we respond to gave early warnings. The problem is, no one was there to catch them.

Why We Left to Build Something Different

We decided to leave because we wanted to build something grounded in a different philosophy, one where customer education and prevention come first.

What We Built Instead

“Our style of work has always been inspections and exploratory first, to come up with a comprehensive and detailed report of our findings before anything takes place. By that point, the customer is already educated, informed, there are no hidden costs, and basically we give all the tools to the customer to make the decision on their own.”
– Naz

We introduced monthly and quarterly preventative maintenance programs designed to catch small issues before they turn into major problems.

Instead of guessing, property owners get detailed inspections that focus on early warning signs most people never see.

Our reporting is fully transparent. We document what we find with photos, clear explanations, and straightforward recommendations. That way, there are no surprises later and no pressure to move forward blindly.

Above all, we take the time to explain what’s happening, why it matters, and what the options are. Because when property owners understand their own homes and buildings, they are able to make confident decisions.

The Industry Needs to Change—And We’re Leading That Change

“What I want is for people to call me for one thing. First things first, education. Next, obviously, if our team can step in and help, we do. But I want to actually become more of a hub, more of a referral network, than just doing in-house work. And train other contractors.”
– Naz

With that in mind, the goal goes beyond individual projects. It is about creating a new standard for the entire industry, one where prevention comes first, and transparency is the norm.

At the same time, building a trusted network matters just as much. Rather than keeping everything in-house, we are focused on connecting property owners with professionals who share the same values.

All of this matters because you deserve a partner who tells you the truth, even when it is not the most profitable option. More importantly, you deserve to fully understand what’s happening with your property.

If You are Ready for a Different Approach

If you are ready to understand your property better and spot problems before they become emergencies, N.T.O.E. is your partner.
